The Japanese-German art- and cultural project [to]BREAK was initiated at short notice to deal with the catastrophes in Japan in March 2011 from the perspective of arts.

The exhibition could be seen in „Christian Jensen Kolleg“ Breklum at the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein/Northern Germany from 8th May, 2011 onwards until the end of June (26th).

Japanese artists have sent digital data of their works and thereby form the basis of the project. The artworks (paintings, grafic arts and photography) were not systematically selected, but shall represent a spontaneous reaction to the exceptional circumstances in Japan, corresponding to the character of the project.

In the course of the following weeks German artists will respond to the Japanese artworks with their own works. This process of the art dialogue was finished for the time being at 22th May, 2011.

For some Japanese artists it was not possible to take part in the exhibition project because of their personal circumstances at home, although they had shown interest. This „absence“ is represented in the exhibition by empty white canvas.
The project has got the character of a developing process for reflecting the exceptional circumstances in Japan. [to]BREAK will be develop itself further beyond the exhibition time in Breklum. We hope that further artists will take part and that the exhibition can be shown at more places.

Within the project pupils of the Domschule in Schleswig will develop a film project under the direction of the teacher and artist André Kuhl. The film has the title "Pink noise" and will be shown in Breklum in August.

There will be collected money for the people affected by the catastrophe in Japan.

2011年3月に日本で起きた災害に、今しっかりと眼を向けるため、まもなく日本とドイツを繋ぐ芸術文化プロジェクト (to)break が開催されます。

この展示は5月8日から6月28日までの期間中、ドイツ、シュレースビッヒ・ホルシュタイン州に位置する西海岸の町、Breklumの「Christian Jensen Kolleg」にて開催されます。初日15時(ドイツ時刻)から行われる簡単な開催記念パーティーにおいて、「アートによる対話」の起点となる、日本から寄せられた作品が公開されます。


この企画のベースとなる作品は、9名の日本のアーティストから送られた、自身の作品のデジタル写真です。絵画やグラフィック、写真から成るこれらの作品は、あるテーマを定めて募集されたものではなく、今の日本の非常事態に対して短期間で企画されたこのプロジェクトに合わせ、日本からもあまり期間を置かずに答えていただいた今の反応を直接表現しています。作品のジャンルについても、彫刻や、音楽、文学など特にジャンルは問わず、募集を行いました。

次の2週間は、ドイツの複数のアーティストが、自身の作品を通して、日本からの作品との対話を試みます。この展示は、そのような言葉ではない、直接心に訴えかける方法によって補われていきます。
この、アートによる対話の過程は5月22日(日)に初めて完結し、22日の15時(ドイツ時刻)から公開されます。

日本のアーティストの中には、今の生活状況の中、今回の企画への参加が困難であった方もいらっしゃいました。この「何も表現することのできない現状」は、展示の中に、何も印刷されていない白い布を吊るすことによって象徴付けられます。
